The Courageous venture
Church film proves a box office hit
A movie produced by a Baptist church has reached number four in the US box office charts. The film, Courageous, has put Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia, under Hollywood’s spotlight. The church uses amateur actors and members of its own congregation, yet managed to enlist the help of TriStar, Sony and Provident Films to make the film.
The theme of Courageous is fatherhood, inspiring dads to stay with their families and not to fail their children.
Taking over $9 million on its opening weekend,Courageous was the fourth-best grossing movie despite opening in fewer cinemas than the Hollywood films that came below it.
One of the actors, Ken Bevel, says making money is not the aim: ‘Our desire is to see hearts changed and families touched.’
