Catherine Tate plays God in Bible drama

A London theatre is holding a series of plays to mark the 400th anniversary of the King James BibleSixty-Six Books opened this week at the Bush Theatre with a 24-hour performance of Genesis, starring Catherine Tate as God in high heels alongside an angel using a laptop.

Sixty-Six Books involves 130 actors, 23 directors and 66 writers, ranging from Sir Andrew Motion and Carol Ann Duffy to Billy Bragg and the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The first play, Godblog, is Jeanette Winterson’s 21st-century version of Genesis, in which God uses Twitter. Artistic director Josie Rourke says the play is humorous and you don’t have to be ‘a person of faith’ to enjoy it. She adds: ‘It’s something we’ve not explored before through a theatrical platform.’
