Am I looking at this correctly?
“They refused to obey and were not mindful of the wonders that you performed among them, but they stiffened their neck and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt.” Nehemiah 9:17.
This passage contains a couple of staggering admissions. First: they were not mindful of the wonders that God performed.
It’s staggering to think that God could do amazing things in my life and yet I remain not mindful.
The second admission is that they planned for a return to their slavery.
And the two admissions go together. If you are able to sidestep, forget or simply overlook the miraculous in your life right now, the prospect of a return to your old life doesn’t seem such a terrible idea!
What if we are looking at this scripture in the wrong way? We can claim we have never seen God do a “big” miracle, when God is blessing us with “little” miracles every day. The job you have, the healthy family, your relationships, even your salvation are all gifts, all blessings. We are told that every good gift comes from God (James 1:17). If our good gifts come from God, then we are right to assume that they aren’t our doing and come from the Lord.
This makes for a deeply humbling experience that allows us to trust God more.
P.S. There is nothing to go back to!
