There are four steps given (in Ephesians 3:14-21) to becoming an Outsider-Reacher. They form the gist of Paul’s prayer for the church that he planted in Ephesus.
He prayed thus: For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom the whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.
STEP ONE: Know your family: “The whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. ” Family: not a nation, not a gender, not a class, nor an interest-group, club or association. It’s a a blood-type! A DNA connection. You are Family by nature. You must see the connection because it’s “For this reason ” God wants to make Outsider-Reachers. Do you recognise your family members? Sure? Anyone left out?
STEP TWO: Make Christ Centre: “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.” I need Holy Spirit power so that Christ dwells here, centre-stage in our lives… through FAITH.
And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep [is the love of Christ], and to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
STEP THREE: See the Big Picture: “Rooted and established in love.” All you have to do is love the one in front of you. He’s family. What does that look like? It may be just a cup of cold water, perhaps. “Ability…to grasp how wide and long and high and deep.” I need to understand Spiritual Vectors- they form the Kaleidoscope of God’s wise purposiveness! It’s a metaphor to speak of the wonders of a multi-dimensional God, who is a God of power (Eph 1:19), rich in mercy (Eph 2:4), lavish in his grace (Eph 2:7; 3:7), and rich in wisdom (Eph3:10).
So what do you need to reach outsiders? You need to be strengthened in spiritual power, love, and knowledge. inner spiritual strength: the indwelling of Christ in your hearts and the ability to comprehend all the dimensions of spiritual realities and “grow in your knowing” of an Unknowable God! Easy peasy.
STEP FOUR: Know God! What is “the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge”? The Greek word used here for “knowledge” is gnōsis, and it is likely that the writer is referring to the kind of (spiritual) “knowledge” that, Paul says, can sometimes become “puffed up” (1 Corinthians 8:1).
I need the right kind of knowledge! It has to be personal, relational, spiritual. Feeling daunted?
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
