“ He whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night,
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.” (Psalm 1:2-3)
How do you come to delight in God’s Word? It’s because you found delight in Jesus. It’s not enough for us to just read words from the Bible, but it’s a matter of allowing The Word of God to become a shaping principle in our lives. “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect, will of God.” (Romans 12:2). There are truths that must be internalized. There are some verses that must be memorized, or at least become so familiar that we know where they are in the Bible and we can say the verse almost word by word.
And what happens next? According to this verse, you will be refreshed and nourished. You will be fruitful, durable and prosperous! John Piper describes such people: “They are refreshing and nourishing to be around. You go away from them fed. You go away strengthened. You go away with your taste for spiritual things awakened. Their words are healing and convicting and encouraging and deepening and enlightening. Being around them is like a meal.”
Lord, this morning I delight in this very word before me now: and within the responsive action of my delight, I am growing fruitful, durable and stable. It is wonderful to know you!
