“Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers.” (Psalm 1:1)
Everyone is under the influence, one way or another.
I remember a Simpsons cartoon where Homer makes a decision, aided and abetted by a little devil Homer and a little angel Homer, perched on opposing shoulders with contrary advice! (PS It ends badly). So who are you listening to? What words and ideas shape your actions?
Some will start each day by reading their horoscope. Some will earnestly ponder the words of a TV psychic. Some will listen to a Talk Show and get counsel on how to deal with everyday life. Some folks will buy a magazine just to read some ”ungodly counsel” that’s not worth the paper it’s printed on. Think about who you listen to!
The verse suggests a progression: “Walk…stand…sit.” We move from consulting the ungodly to identifying with them. We no longer oppose their viewpoint, we embrace what they say. “The company of mockers” is a powerfully negative idea. It suggests arriving at a place where you sneer at what is holy and serious and important.
Lord, help me to watch the drift of my thoughts today. I pray that I do not “conform to the pattern of this world“, but that I am daily transformed by the renewing of my mind in your Word, and through your Spirit.
